New York OakNorth - Product Development Contract
With offices in London, New York, Manchester, Istanbul, Gurgaon, Bengaluru, Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong, OakNorth is the next-generation credit platform that’s redefining lending to small and medium-sized businesses globally.
 
OakNorth was set up in 2015 by Rishi Khosla and Joel Perlman, who previously co-founded Copal Amba and grew it to 3,000 employees over 12 years, before selling it to Moody’s (NYSE: MCO) in 2014, returning 125 times capital to seed investors.
 
Since its inception, OakNorth has secured over $1bn from several investors, including: Clermont Group, Coltrane, EDBI of Singapore, GIC, Indiabulls, NIBC, Toscafund, and SoftBank’s Vision Fund.
 
In the UK, the platform has helped us build a profitable loan book (via OakNorth Bank) of over £4bn and secure over £600m of repayments. In terms of the impact this has had on the economy, OakNorth Bank’s loans have directly helped with the creation of 10,000 new homes and 13,000 new jobs in the UK, as well as adding several billion pounds to the economy. Globally, the platform has been deployed at various banks across North America, Europe, and Asia.
 
Today, the global team is made up of almost 730 people.

OakNorth Customer Engineers (CEs) understand our client’s integration problems and implement solutions to address them.  CEs create robust and scalable data integrations between client systems and the OakNorth Platform.  CEs work eliminates waste for our clients, increases the flow of data between OakNorth and the client, and improves the accuracy of critical information. 

CEs directly deploy technical solutions to solve our clients’ most difficult integration problems.  CEs lead the way in developing integration solutions, from high-level system design and prototyping to application development, testing and data integration.  

As a CE, you leverage everything available to you -- OakNorth tools, open source technologies, and anything you and your team can build to drive real impact for the client.  You work with clients from all over the USA, combining the experiences from individual client projects to strengthen OakNorth tools and our approach to integration.

This is a new team and early hires can expect to shape the culture, working practices and tools the team uses. Similarly, Solutions Engineers will work with minimal line management, prioritising their work and schedule.  
 
The CE team is entirely remote and successful candidates must be comfortable as part of a virtual team and have the ability to spend significant periods working on customer sites across the USA. 
Technologies
  • We use the OakNorth Platform to provide the foundations for all deployments 
  • We build custom applications on top of the OakNorth platform, extending its core functionality to meet the needs of the client integration. Technologies include:  
  • Postgres and Spark for distributed data storage and parallel computing, and Kafka for streaming data and ingestion. 
  • Our backend data processing and analysis tools are built in Python. 
  • OakNorth infrastructure is hosted completely on AWS. 
  • You have:
  • A unique blend of deep technical insight and a love of sales-first engagement with clients 
  • An understanding of compliance, security, data management and other regulatory issues 
  • A High standard of written and verbal technical communication: able to hold a whiteboard conversation or write a white paper that is clear to a non-technical audience and credible to a technical one 
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work anywhere in the US for extended periods of time 
  • You will:
  • Be a strong engineer: the technical interview will be the same interview our mainline engineers pass
  • Be familiar with tech-first banking or other finance products, ideally in a fast moving startup 
  • Familiarity with data structures, storage systems, cloud infrastructure  and other technical tools
  • Proficiency with programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, or similar languages
  • Ability to work effectively in teams of technical and non-technical individuals
  • Be a creative problem-solver: have a broad range of tech skills and an ability to draw on these to solve a diverse range of tech problems presented by integrating with client systems 
  • Be quick to pick up technology and not afraid to roll your sleeves up and implement features yourself
